South Maitland Railways Pty Limited (SMR) was Established in 1891. Over the years SMR has had several shareholders with the most recent being Aurizon Holdings Pty Ltd, who purchased 100% of shares on the 2nd of March 2022. SMR’s business continues to operate as usual, offering our existing clients and potential clients the same service and infrastructure it has for over a 131years.
SMR provides rail infrastructure facilities and services to companies supporting the rail industry and those reliant on its proximity and access to the ARTC Main North Line. These services range from short or long term stabling, to providing areas for R&M and testing and calibration of rolling stock. SMR is a self-sufficient rail business; being the owner and operator of the network, an accredited rail infrastructure manager and rollingstock operator, owning R&M machinery, equipment, and tools, with experienced management and staff in place.
The 24.14 kilometres of main line plus yards are classified as a registered private siding. The northern end provides private open access to the ARTC Main North Line. The ARTC Main Line connects to the Hunter Valley Coal Network the Port of Newcastle and through to Interstate rail networks. This access point is located approximately 40 minutes from the Port of Newcastle and minutes from the city of Maitland.
Our axle load within the yard is 27 tonne, however we can accommodate a higher axle load in some cases.
